Introduction to TEACCH Part I

This two-day Core Training will provide an introduction to the characteristics and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders, an overview of the culture of autism and how it impacts the classroom, and a comprehensive explanation of structured teaching. The four components of structured teaching (physical environment, individual schedules, work systems, and visual structure), and the importance of utilizing strengths and interests will be covered in depth. By utilizing these strategies participants will be able to increase student learning, increase communication and socialization, and decrease challenging behaviors. This workshop is interactive and includes the use of video, slides, and a make and take. ASHA CEUs.

Autism Consultation Visit

Full day consultation includes classroom observation (up to 2 classrooms per day) and feedback on the components of structured teaching. Time is provided for a meeting at some mutually-agreed upon point in the day. A written report is provided within one week of the visit.

Food Glorious Food: Addressing the Challenges of Food and Eating For Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Workshop provides participants with the tools needed to identify, understand, and accommodate the often unusual or limited involvement children with ASD have with food and eating. Inclusion Training: Including Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in General Education Classrooms

This two-day training provides professionals that work in general education settings insight into what an autism spectrum disorder is, how it is diagnosed, and what is meant by the “culture of autism.” Participants will learn about the sensory challenges facing children on the spectrum and what can be done to address these challenges in a school setting. This training will also address the passions and interests that are often encountered in this population in a productive and meaningful manner. The entire second day will concentrate on strategies for success throughout the day in a general education setting. Special attention will be given to transitions, lunch, recess, gym, and class work. Participants will leave with the information and skills needed to implement various strategies to address the needs of children with ASD in a respectful manner. This training will include slides, video, and small group work.

NYSED Approved Coursework for Autism: Certification

This three-hour training program has been developed in accordance with the NYS Education Department’s Autism Syllabus. This course is required for all persons applying for a teaching certificate or license on or after 2/2/07 as a special education teacher or as a school administrator who works in special education. However, this course is open to all who are interested in a general overview of autism within the educational process.
